What BookRank keeps

BookRank asks for no name, no email address and no password. Three small cookies are kept in your browser: one keeps your private access link, which the service needs to work; the other two keep the theme (light or dark) and the language (French or English) you chose, contain no personal data and are used for nothing else. No third-party audience measurement tool and no advertising service is used: BookRank keeps only its own counts (visits, pages read, where you came from, the features you are interested in), described above, and shares them with nobody.

BookRank also keeps the public best-seller lists of the Amazon.ca categories your books appear in (the Amazon identifiers of the books, their position in the list, their title and their language), with no link to an author, as well as the same lists limited to the books of a single language.

BookRank's links to Amazon.ca carry BookRank's affiliate identifier when it has one: if you buy after clicking, BookRank may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Amazon may place its own cookies when you open one of these links; it receives the affiliate identifier, but not the address of the BookRank page you come from. BookRank places no cookie for these links, records no click and knows nothing about your purchases.

To help you, the BookRank team can look at your pages (your books and their rank), read-only: this does not change anything and is not counted as a visit from you.

What is passed to a third party

To get the rank of a book, BookRank passes only its Amazon identifier (ASIN) to a third-party provider of Amazon data. No personal data is passed to it. BookRank keeps the provider's answers in full: they are public information about products (title, format, year, rank…), never linked to an author. It also keeps the cover of the tracked books, downloaded from Amazon.ca, with no link to an author. The title, format, rankings and author name that Amazon.ca gives for a book can appear on BookRank's public pages (the list of growing books and the category, book and author pages) when the book is among the first places of a category's best-seller list, like any other book; none of these displays is linked to an author account. The title, format, year and author name that Amazon.ca gives for a book that BookRank knows can also appear in the list of books, on that book's page and on an author page, even when the book is not among the first places; the page then shows no rank. These lists are the same for everyone, whether the book is tracked or not: they do not say which authors use BookRank, nor which books are tracked.

If you use “Find my books from my Amazon.ca author page”, BookRank reads that public page on Amazon.ca once to show the list of your books. The address you paste is not kept, nor is the list: only the books you tick are saved.

Keeping and deleting

Your data is kept for the length of the pilot. Within 30 days after the pilot ends, we delete everything linked to you (your label, the books you track, your visits and the pages read, your add attempts, your messages and the features you are interested in), unless you agreed to continue. The ranks observed for the books you were tracking, the product records and the provider's answers are kept with no link to you. You can ask at any time for the deletion of your access and of everything linked to you by writing to robin@millette.info. In that case too, the observed ranks, the product records and the provider's answers are kept with no link to you. The server's technical log also keeps, for 30 days at most, one line each time the team looks at an author's pages: the author's number, the page and the time, with no name or label. That line is not deleted with your access; it disappears with the log. After a deletion, BookRank keeps only the author's number and the date of the deletion, with no label or other data, in a deletion register: it is there so that restoring a backup copy cannot bring the deleted data back. Deleted data may remain in our backup copies for at most 14 days.

The team may also delete an author whose tracked books are outside the interest of the pilot (for example in another language or published before the years the pilot follows), with everything linked to them: their books, their visits and the pages read, their add attempts, their messages, the features they are interested in and their access link.

About the rank

BookRank is independent of Amazon. The sales rank is a relative indicator of sales performance: it is not a number of copies sold, and the figures shown are samples taken at least once a day.
